I guess this forum will also be going away soon, hopefully with a better
replacement(it would be hard to find a worse one :) ).

Thanks to the (former) gaim developers.  Wow - so much of the last few years
make sense now.  I'm glad you guys are finally able to get things out in the
open (and hopefully quit being hassled by AOL!).  I'm glad you guys stuck with
it, and are finally out of a losing situation where you can't provide the information
that some of your users and audience so badly wanted, in order to protect those
same people and the gaim client.

Another words  - thank you!  I'm sure you'll enjoy the new opportunity to move
forward with everything in whatever ways you want.  :D

I have been thinking about joining gaim development in some manner for awhile.
It's the open source project I am most interested in (besides Firefox) and I
have been following it for quite a while.  Further, while I am relatively unskilled
I still think I can usefully contribute.

It seems to me the area I could best contribute right now would be a new UI
for Windows.  It seems the developers would prefer this actually be a separate
project that uses libpurple - is this correct?  Are there any projects out there,
as I know it is better to join an existing one than start a new one?

Finally, do the developers have any words of wisdom / recommendations for where
I could get involved?  That is, would it be better if I spend time helping with
the current windows build or even time helping with the Pidgin code?

For what it is worth, I run Mac OS X, Ubuntu, and Win XP on 4 different machines
at my house, and I run IM clients on all of them regularly, including now starting
to video chat (primarily for when I travel).  Obviously I can do a good deal
of testing.

So - any advice or areas you'd like me to get involved?  My ears are open.  :D

I think I can speak for the entire team when in saying that we'd love for people
to write a native win32 UI and would be supportive of such an endeavour.

Whew ! I've been scared for a while that GAIM was dying as a project (due to
the sparsity of news), but this latest news post has given me some much needed
relief. Congratulations on pushing past this difficult hurdle (and to many
more)!.

Thanks, datallah.  I'm glad I have your support.

Does anyone have advice / recommendations, or shall I just dive right in?

My main question is understanding what I can code the interface in, or how to
use it with / bind it to libpurple.  I also assume this should be a separate
project, similar to Adium, correct?

You can link to libpurple just as you would any other C library.  You should
be able to write the interface in any language that has bindings for both Glib
(libpurple depends on glib, but not on GTK+) and for being linked against C
libraries.  I would suggest C, but C++ would certainly also work.

I would suggest you subscribe to [hidden email] and commits.pidgin.im  These
mailing lists will help you significantly. See
http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo  You also want to consider
[hidden email], but that one is far more optional.  Either way, you will
want to register an account at developer.pidgin.im, and give it a real email
address, though it does not *yet* require it.

You'll find the devel mailing list a much more fruitful place than this forum.
As you have specific questions, I would suggest you turn to that list first.

We are also in the jabber conference [hidden email] and the irc
channel #pidgin at irc.freenode.net

Yes, this forum will almost certainly be closed.  I am not sure what, if anything,
will replace it right now.

This forum has been largely ignored by the development team.  While there have
been bursts of activity by myself, deryni, datallah, and others, many and at
times all posts get little or no attention from us.

The mailing lists on the other hand, get regular responces, and a high level
of developer presence.  Similarly, much effort was (in the past) put into maintaining
the FAQ.  At other times documentation was written, but in the face of a reality
in which it was quite clearly not being read, the motivation to maintain & update
those docs evaporated.

I suspect that, based on what I have observed of other projects, that while
using a wiki/tracker combo for support in place of the forum/bug tracker combo
offers some risks (there are some very confusing wikis out there), it can be
a more useful and vibrant interaction.  I want to try for that.

Right now we have trac, which provides an integrated wiki & tracker, up
at developer.pidgin.im.  It lacks a lot of information, some of which the current
webpage (copied for now to www.pidgin.im) has.

First of all congratulation and good luck with the name changes ;-)

But I wanted to know if it was possible to have more information (details) about
the settlement of the case.
Since every thing was quiet secretive I do not know much about the details,
but I am always interested in the resolution of such case.

thanks in advance,

I believe you can peruse the appropriate mailing list (CABAL) - at least I was
able to.  But it might be easier to just wait until some more posts are made
that provide more details.  I imagine they will be coming sometime over the
next few weeks, now that the uncertainty is over.
